There were lots of resources in this week's module that told us about gadgets. Some are obsolete, some have changed our lives. What I found most interesting about the Gadgets That Changed Everything article is that they all have one thing in common. They all made us more mobile. Every single gadget in that article gave us the freedom to take our information with us. Pranav Mistry is taking it to another level with his Sixth Sense technology.
I must say, when I watched the Sixth Sense video, my first thought was that I wondered why I hadn't heard more about it, since the video was made in 2009. I decided to research Pranav Mistry to see if he was still working on this technology, or if he had moved on to other things after graduate school. What I discovered was the Sixthsense wiki, complete with community contributed tutorials for creating your own wearable device. Mistry has taken his project to the community, where it can be improved upon by other like-minded enthusiasts. His prototype software is open source, so anyone can use it, or even improve upon it. Mistry's project has become an experiment in social knowing.
Yesterday, Samsung was all over the news, because of recent
trademark applications concerning "Samsung Galaxy Gear," wearable
digital electronic devices in the forms of a wristwatch, wrist band or
bangle. Apple and Google are also testing wearable computers. It would appear that wearing our devices may be coming to us in the near future, continuing the trend for mobility that began with those gadgets that changed our lives.
